Don't Cry For The Horses"

Brenda Riley-Seymore

Don't cry for the horses
That life has set free
A million white horses
Forever to be

Don't cry for the horses
Now in God's hands
As they dance and they prance
To a heavenly band

They were ours as a gift
But never to keep
As they close their eyes
Forever to sleep

Their spirits unbound
On silver wings they fly
A million white horses
Against the blue sky

Look up into heaven
You'll see them above
The horses we lost
The horses we loved

Manes and tails flowing
They gallop through time
They were never yours
They were never mine

Don't cry for the horses
They will be back someday
When our time has come
They will show us the way

On silver wings they will lift us
To the warmth of the sun
When our life is over
And eternity has begun

We will jump the sun
And dance over the moon
A ballet of horses and riders on the winds
Of a heavenly tune

Do you hear that soft nicker
Close to your ear
Don't cry for the horses
Love the ones that are here
Don't cry for the horses

Lift up your sad eyes
Can't you see them
As they fly by

A million white horses
Free from hunger and pain
Their spirits set free
Until we ride again

Pumpkin Grazing

Pumpkin, the horse whose legend will live on. She was an amazing horse. She helped Laurie Flanagan start Horses of Hope in 2009. She truly is a unique horse.

Pumpkin - “The first horse to be used in the program is a champagne colored horse named Pumpkin. She is thought to be a Quarter Horse Saddlebred Cross, but little is known of her ancestry. Pumpkin was purchased from Crooked Fence Farm in Rochester Mills, PA. This farm originally rescued Pumpkin from a situation in which she was not receiving proper care. After spending some time at their farm, Pumpkin had eventually undergone training to work in their therapeutic riding program and had done very well in the program. Pumpkin will always have the unique distinction of being the first horse at Horses of Hope.”

Pumpkin crossed the rainbow bridge in the fall of 2016. Her swayed back has been corrected with wings. Pumpkin will be missed by everyone. In honor of her, we’ve included pictures from volunteers, participants, and those who loved Pumpkin and a special poem we found. She will always be remembered.

Jackson was an 18-year-old Quarter Horse Paint gelding. Jackson joined the program in 2021 and loved his time with his new riders. He was so willing to learn and go where you needed him to go. To do what you needed him to do without getting into trouble or getting worked up. He was curious which we love in our horses but mindful to listen. He was so gentle and was always soft around children or adults who might not know what to do in the saddle. Jackson crossed the Rainbow Bridge in June of 2023. Everyone loved him and he will be missed, but his pain is gone and he is running free.
